Caspar Schatzgeyer

Kaspar Schatzgeyer (also: Caspar Schatzger, lat Sasgerus; * 1463 or 1464 in Landshut, † September 18, 1527 in Munich) was a Franciscan ( OFM), a controversial theologian of the Reformation period.

Life

Caspar Schatzger was born around 1463 in Landshut, where he learned his basic training in Minoritenkloster. From 1480 he studied in Ingolstadt and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from. To 1482 he took the vows as Franciscans. Where he then began his theological studies, is not known. His Order, he was repeatedly as a lecturer of theology available. So from 1487 in Landshut, from 1489 to 1497 in Ingolstadt, 1496 in Munich, where he is also assigned as Guardian from 1499 to 1508. From 1510 to 1514 he again worked as a lecturer and preacher in Ingolstadt. Since his time in Ingolstadt he was friends with John Eck. As a Franciscan, he was from 1514 to 1517 and from 1520 to 1523 Provincial of the Upper German Province of the Order. In this role, he learned on his many reform and visitations the atmosphere of upheaval of the time know. From 1517 to 1520 he was Guardian in Nuremberg, where he made ​​the acquaintance of Caritas Pirckheimer.

Several times he had to take action against the Reformation -minded members of religious orders. So he joined in 1521 the Ulm preacher Eberlin of Günzburg contrary. On a visitation in 1522 to Basel, he had to take action against some designated as Lutheran Franciscans. In the same year he was appointed Guardian in Munich. He died there on September 18, 1527 and was buried in the choir of the Franciscan church in Munich.

Effect

Among the controversial theologians of the Reformation period, Schatzger Emser and Murner applies in contrast to the corner, rather than moderate representative, the personal polemic avoided. On the initiative of the Bavarian Chancellor Leonhard von Eck appeared in 1543 a complete edition of the Latin writings. Nevertheless, his work remained behind the controversial writings of other theologians of his time in the background.
