Cass Gilbert

Cass Gilbert ( * November 24, 1859 in Zanesville, Ohio, † May 17 1934 in Brockenhurst, England ) was an American architect.

He studied at MIT and first worked for the architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White. After several years of independent practice in Minnesota, he managed to establish himself in New York. His Woolworth Building ( 1910-13 ) was more than 15 years the tallest building in the world and is considered a major influence on the New York high-rise style of the 1920s. Another realized high-rise project Gilberts is the New York Life Insurance Building ( 1926). From Gilbert submitted the plans for the 1932-35 classical building erected by the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, DC. Too, Brooklyn Army Terminal, was designed by him.
