Castelletto (Genoa)

Castelletto is an elegant residential district of the Italian port city of Genoa. It is located on the hills above the city center (Centro storico ) in the immediate vicinity of the city hill of Righi. The name comes from Castelletto a fortress here, which was inserted in this zone in the former city walls and fortifications. Castelletto is the diminutive of Castello to German Castle.

The district is part of the Munizip I Centro Est. At Castelletto also include the districts of Piazza Daniele Manin and the former village of San Nicola. Overall, the district reached a total population of 29 371 inhabitants.

History

The zone in which the fortress was built, one of the hill slopes of Monte Albano. This area has already been mentioned at the time of the Roman Empire under the name Castelletum.

The fort was built around the 10th century and served after taking the Republic of Genoa by the French in the late 14th century, the French Governor as the official residence.

After Genoa was in 1528 became independent again, the fortress of Castelletto was demolished by the Genoese as a symbol of foreign domination.

1821, the castle was built by the Savoy again and finally finally razed to the ground during the popular uprising of 1849. The territory was parceled out in the following years and sold as a basic piece of land to individuals.
