Catalog of Nearby Habitable Systems

The Catalog of Nearby Habitable Systems ( HabCat ) is a directory of star systems that could theoretically contain planets in each life zone. This list was created by scientists Jill Tarter and Margaret Turnbull under the auspices of the Phoenix Project ( a part of SETI ).

The list is based on the Hipparcos Catalogue, which contains a total of 118 218 stars. By sorting out of a whole range of stellar characteristics, this list contains currently 17,129 " HabStars ".
