Cathedral of Saint Bavo

The Saint Bavo Cathedral is the Episcopal Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Haarlem -Amsterdam. The church building was built in 1895-1930 as the successor to the State Water St Joseph's Church. This church was the new bishop's seat instead of the St. Bavo Church, which since 1578 is part of the Reformation to the Protestant Church in the re-establishment of the diocese in 1855.

1948 the church received by Pope Pius XII. the title of minor basilica.

Inside the cathedral, the former sacristy into a small museum ( Schatkamer ) was converted and displays historical art treasures from Haarlem Catholic history.

Architectural History

Since 1853, the Church of St. Joseph served as a cathedral, but was too small for this task, despite magnifications. Bishop Bottemanne started planning to build a new cathedral in 1893, which should also serve as a parish church. Originally Pierre Cuypers should the church design, but on the basis of age received his son, Joseph Cuypers, the order. Cuypers initially designed a church in neo- Gothic style, apparently still in the influence of his father, but eventually Cuypers decided after numerous changes for the Neo - Romanesque style with influences from the Byzantine and Art Nouveau. The construction started in 1895 with the establishment of the choir and its chapel wreath. On April 1, 1898, the cathedral was consecrated. In the years 1902-1906 the building went out. Due to lack of funds, the construction of the towers was delayed until 1927. During this period, Cuypers was supported by his son Pierre Cuypers Jr..

Organ

The great organ of the Cathedral, the Willibrordorgel, was built in 1921-1923 by the company Adema for Santa Willibrorduskirche in Amsterdam and in 1971 added to Haarlem. The organ has eighty Register on four manuals and pedal. Furthermore, there is a Adema organ of 1907 and for the choir is a Cabinet organ of about 1800 in use.
