Roman Catholic Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam

The Diocese of Haarlem -Amsterdam (January 1, 2009: Diocese of Haarlem ) (Latin: Dioecesis Harlemensis - Amstelodamensis ) is one of the seven Roman Catholic dioceses of the Dutch church province.

History

First foundation

In 1559, Pope Paul IV at the elevation of the bishopric of Utrecht to the archbishopric of five new dioceses in the Netherlands, including the Diocese of Haarlem suffragan. This was done at the instigation of Philip II to this diocese was granted a long life. Haarlem in 1578 fell into the hands of the Calvinists and Bishop Godfried van Mierlo had to flee from the city. Until then, it had only seen two bishops:

Start-up

1833 an Apostolic Administration was established in Haarlem with the professor Cornelis van Wijckersloot Ludovicus van Schalkwijk ( 1786-1851 ). The Diocese of Haarlem was built again on 5 March 1853. First bishop was Franciscus van Vree Josefus. Due to the formation of the Diocese of Rotterdam on July 16, 1955, the Diocese of Haarlem lost part of its territory and its believers. The diocese is called since 2008 Haarlem -Amsterdam.
