Catherine Montagu, Countess of Salisbury

Lady Catherine Grandison (* about 1304 in Ashford, Kent, † April 23, 1349 in Cassington, Oxfordshire ) was an English nobleman and one by marriage Countess of Salisbury and Isle of Man. Catherine Montagu, Countess of Salisbury, was the mistress of King Edward III.

Life

Catherine was the daughter of Sir William de Grandison, 1st Baron Grandison, and its coming from the Burgundy Sibylle de Thoire -Villars. It was in 1327 with Sir William de Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury ( 1301-1344 ), the eldest son of William de Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu, and Lady Elizabeth Montfort married. The marriage produced six children:

The Garter affair

King Edward III. , Out of the house of Plantagenet, tried with the Order of the Garter ( 1348 ), fixed to bind the principal knight of the kingdom itself. The English name of the Garter is the Order of the Garter. According to legend, the name came into being so: At the dance of the king with his mistress, the Countess of Salisbury, these lost her blue garter. The King unclenched the embarrassing situation by the fact that he picked up the tape and tied to his own leg. He is said to have shouted out loud: Honi soit qui mal y pense (Old French; literally: " Shame on him who thinks ill about it "). These words became the motto of the Order.
