Catherine of Habsburg

Catherine of Habsburg (c. 1256 in Rheinfelden, † April 4, 1282 in Landshut ) was the third child of King Rudolf I from his marriage to Gertrude of Hohenberg. She married about 1279 Duke Otto III. of Lower Bavaria, who later also King of Hungary.

In the time of a short-term approach of Bavaria to Austria was a marriage agreement between Duke Henry XIII. taken from Lower Bavaria with Rudolf I.. Henry's eldest son Otto to marry Catherine, along with 40,000 marks dowry; for this sum demanded Heinrich in return the federal province (present-day Upper Austria ) as a deposit. This agreement secured Rudolf in the first decisive confrontation with Otakar I Přemysl the free way to Vienna.

To 1279 the wedding took place in Vienna. The approach, however, was short-lived: after Rudolph's success in Austria Heinrich had to do without the federal province, the dowry was reduced to 3,000 marks. Catherine died after only three years of marriage in Landshut and was buried in Seligenthal monastery near Landshut. With Otto III. she had two children, the twins Rudolf and Henry, who had, however, already in the year of her birth, in 1280, died. By an award of 1283 it was decided that Henry had him return the deposit prescribed goods against payment of 3,000 marks to Rudolf's successor Albrecht I..
