Catherine Opalińska

Catherine Opalinska (Polish Katarzyna Opalinska; born October 13, 1680 in Poznan, † March 19, 1747 in Luneville ) was by marriage, as Catherine Leszczyńska, Queen of Poland, Grand Duchess of Lithuania, Duchess of Lorraine and Bar She came from the noble Opalińskis.

Life

She was born as the daughter of count Jan Karol Opaliński and his wife Zofia Czarnkowska in Poznan.

In May 1698 married in Krakow Stanislaw I. Leszczynski, who was later 1704-1709 and 1733-1736 elected head of state of Poland - Lithuania. The couple had two daughters:

  • Anna Leszczyńska (1699-1717)
  • Maria Leszczyńska (1703-1768), married to the French King Louis XV.

On October 4, 1704 Stanislaus and Katharina were crowned in the Cathedral of Warsaw as King and Queen of Poland. Four years later, her husband was overthrown. From 1709 to 1711 the couple lived in Stettin, and from 1711 to 1714 in the Swedish Kristianstad. After living in Germany they finally settled in Wissembourg in France. After the marriage of her daughter with the French king, they received Chambord castle as a residential palace. 1737 her husband was appointed Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and they lived thenceforth in Luneville in Lorraine.

On March 19, 1747 Catherine passed away, she was in Nancy in the church of Notre- Dame de Bon Secours at the side of her husband and the hearts of her daughter, the French queen, buried.
