Cauliflower ear

The cauliflower ear or cauliflower ear is a permanent disfigurement of the external ear that is caused by bruising in the pinna ( Othämatome ) when it comes to connective tissue organization of the hematoma or the supply of the cartilage with nutrients is prevented and this is destroyed.

Bruising to the ear are usually painless; because of the possible long-term consequences you should still see a doctor even for small, only palpable hematomas. Small swellings are treated with pressure bandage or puncture, surgery for larger needs.

Bruises are the result of acts of violence such as hitting on the ear or sharp bending the pinna. Particularly affected are therefore those sports like judo, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu ( BJJ ), Rugby, Wrestling, Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts ( MMA) exercise.

Also by polychondritis may result in a cauliflower ear.
