Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker Cay Corker or is a small coral island off the coast of Belize in Central America. The island is about 8 miles long and 2 miles wide and lies about 35 kilometers northeast of Belize City in the Caribbean Sea. The nearest inhabited island is Caye Chapel, the next largest island is Ambergris Caye. Caye Caulker has about 1,300 inhabitants, most of whom are Creole, Garifuna and Mestizos. Politically, the island belongs to the province Belize District.

Since 1961, the island consists of two parts. At that time left behind Hurricane Hattie a trench "The Split " is now called. In the northern part of the island is a marine reserve ( Marine Reserve ), which is mostly covered with mangroves and coconut trees and numerous birds provides nesting sites.

South of Split is the main island with the Caye Caulker Village. Previously Caye Caulker was regionally known for its shipbuilding. Today, tourism and fishing are the main sources of income of the residents.

Only just east of Caye Caulker runs the reef edge of the Belize Barrier Reef and thus provides a good starting point for divers and snorkelers.

Traffic Technically there is a regular ferry service to Belize City and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye as well as an airfield. Come as a main means of transportation for use on golf courses on the island.
