Cecilia Beaux

Cecilia Beaux ( born May 1, 1855 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † September 7, 1942 in Gloucester, Massachusetts) was an American painter.

Life

Cecilia Beaux was born in 1855 in Philadelphia and grew after the early death of her mother and her sister in maternal relatives, since her French father did not deal much with his daughters. From 1871, Cecilia received from an aunt who was known primarily for its historical and religious paintings, her first drawing lessons. Due to the great talent aunt made ​​sure that she was able to form at a Dutch artist soon. Cecilia Beaux was finally approved in 1877 at the Pennsylvania Academy as a student. Her first work of art entitled " The Last Days of Childhood ", which she exhibited in Philadelphia in 1885, was an immediate success. Two years later, this painting was exhibited successfully in Paris.

1888, she began a European tour on which they studied the old masters in the museums in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi, and in England and Italy. Her teachers included the painter Tony Robert -Fleury and William Adolphe Bouguereau. From 1900 Cecilia Beaux went to live in New York, where she excelled especially for the rich upper class as a portrait painter. Finally, in her house frequented the New York celebrities from politics, art and economy, which then also gladly had her portrait painted of her. So their exhibitions were social events. Her portraits include that of Georges Clemenceau, Edith Roosevelt and her daughter, and of Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty.
