Cefalù Cathedral

The Cathedral Santissimo Salvatore in Cefalù Cefalù is that of the diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the region of Sicily Cathedral Church. The cathedral has the title of minor basilica and is situated in Piazza Duomo.

History

The construction of the cathedral of Roger II was planned The cathedral was to become his grave church. The construction was started in 1131. The construction but was interrupted several times. 1240 the facade was completed. The protruding part of the facade dates from 1472 and is the work of Ambrogio da Como. Since 1932, the cathedral is restored to the original state and later additions removed.

The exterior

The twin towers were already part of the original church. At the top of the towers are slightly different, mainly in the windows and rooftops. The portico was constructed in 1471 and preceded the actual facade. It was built in the style of late Gothic Catalan. The original present rose window in the apse were bricked in 1142. Inside a larger area for mosaics should arise.

The interior

The interior consists of three naves. The baptismal font dates back to 1588th It consists of limestone. At the remains of the wooden ceiling decorations are still recognizable.

The mosaics of the apse were completed in 1148. They are dominated by the appearance of Christ Pantocrator. There are also Byzantine mosaics. Next are located in the cathedral tombs and sculptures, as a Virgin with Child 1533 by Antonello Gaginis.
