Cemevi

A Cemevi (pronounced dschemewi; cem from the Turkish loanword = Assembly and turkish ev = house, plural: cemevleri ) is an Alevi assembly and worship. However, it is not a building that is used exclusively to hold a Cem. This is where the community or the community council to discuss problems, to settle disputes and to convey the Alevi traditions and teachings. With the proliferation of Alevism in Germany, the common German -language term Cemhaus developed.

Cemsaal

In the Alevi religion no place in the world is considered more sacred than the other. Thus, since a sanctification of the place is forbidden, one can also Cem at almost any other place ( except cemeteries ) are held. In London, a Cemevi was set up in a former synagogue. The building of the Cemhauses in Berlin is a former church. There is no reason to hold a Cem also in a still active synagogue. Contrary to the opinion of many Alevis, a Cem may be performed in a former and still active even Mosque. The only requirement is that worship of the other religious community are not disturbed and their service does not disturb the Cem. In the past it was customary to celebrate a Cem outdoors, but by the urbanization of more and more Alevis, buildings were to practice the service required. So there must be in a Cemevi also a room where a Cem case may be. This hall is usually decorated with carpets and often on the walls hang pictures of Hz.Ali or the 12 imams, Haci Bektas -i Veli and Atatürk. At the end of the hall is a place for the Dede or Cemleiter. Along the wall there is seating for the participants of the Cem. The middle section is provided with seats, so there the Semah can be danced. The seating is in Turkey mainly on the floor -mounted seat cushion. Contrast, have taken in Turkish cities in Europe and chairs or benches into place.

House of Study

A Cemevi needs the premises for teaching activities offer. This may be separate classrooms. Since the Cemsaal must not only be used for the Cem, it can also be used for other community events. If a municipality does not have its own classrooms has, the lessons take place mostly here. Are taught dances, playing the Saz and religion. Since the Alevis in Europe often have a migration background, see the Cemevi language courses in the local language instead.

Courtroom

The Cemevi as a courtroom for the Alevi jurisdiction today does not mean much more. During the Ottoman Empire each ethnic group carried out its jurisdiction by autonomous, because they did not want to submit to Islamic law. But since the secularization of Turkey, Alevis turn to the courts of law and carry any disputes arising from there. Less complicated disputes are sometimes settled in yet Cemevi. This avoids the cost of ordinary court proceedings. For criminal matters, Cemevi is in a state of law, however, not responsible. Chance come in Cemevi before wedding ceremonies that are made in addition to the civil marriage.

History

The structure of today's Cemevi can indeed still on the characteristics of the Bektashi tradition or their variants in Alevi Anatolia traced, but the increasing urbanization of the Alevis and the dissemination of Alevism in Western Europe demanded changes. In order to meet modern demands, is Cemevi developed in Western Europe and in large cities of Turkey to multifunctional buildings with a wide cultural offer. In addition to the traditional classroom into dancing ( Semah ), saz and religion offer Cemevi in Europe on language courses and computer courses. A Cemevi also requires facilities for counseling of its members and in Turkey developed further -promoting activities such as tutoring and homework help. In some Cemevi mediation is offered. The function as a courtroom was completely abandoned.
