Center for Hellenic Studies

The Center for Hellenic Studies is a research institute for Classical Studies in Washington, DC It belongs to Harvard University and to the promotion of young academics dedicated. The Institute promotes external research projects and annually offers several fellows the opportunity to live for a year at the Center and conduct research.

The core of the center is the extensive research library, which was one of the first of its kind in the United States. It has been gradually expanded since its founding.

The Center for Hellenic Studies was set up in 1961 by a foundation of the Old Dominion Foundation. The first director was Michael Putnam (1962-1963), deputizing for Bernard MacGregor Walker Knox ( 1963-1985 ). He was followed by Zeph Stewart ( 1985-1992 ). Under the Co-Directors Kurt Raaflaub and Deborah Boedeker (1992-2000) was raised to twelve the number of junior fellows of eight.

Since 2000, Gregory Nagy, director of the Center for Hellenic Studies. Under his aegis, the digital agora was established in 2006 and opened a branch office in Nafplio ( Greece). The management of the Centre is supported by five Senior Fellows, who are elected for five years. The Senior Fellows are currently (as of February 2011) Anton Bierl and Angelos Hanioti.
