Centracanthidae

Spicara flexuosa

The snout bream ( Centracanthidae ), also called picarel are a family of perch relatives ( Percomorphaceae ).

Features

There are 20-38 centimeters long fish that live in the eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and on the coast of South Africa. They feed on plankton, which they filter with their six gills Reuse rays out of the water. My upper jaw is very far vorstülpbar. All species have 24 vertebrae.

Fins formula: Dorsal XI -XIII / 9 - 17, Anal III / 9 - 16

System

The snout bream together with the sea bream ( Sparidae ), the Großkopfschnappern ( Lethrinidae ) and the Scheinschnappern ( Nemipteridae ) a group of related " sparoider " families ( Sparoidea ) the Percoidei was regarded by some scientists as a family, but later in their own order ( Spariformes ) from the Perciformes ( Perciformes ) was spun.

The snout bream nine species are currently counted in two genera:

  • Genus Centracanthus Centracanthus cirrus Rafinesque, 1810.
  • Spicara alta ( Osório, 1917).
  • Spicara australis ( Regan, 1921).
  • Spicara axillary ( Boulenger, 1900).
  • Spicara maena (Linnaeus, 1758).
  • Spicara martinicus ( Valenciennes, 1830).
  • Spicara melanurus ( Valenciennes, 1830).
  • Spicara nigricauda (Norman, 1931).
  • Spicara smaris (Linnaeus, 1758).

In a study on internal classification of sea bream was found that the Sparidae, are monophyletic only with the inclusion of the genus Spicara that is normally found in the snout bream. The genus Centracanthus was not the subject of research, so that by their systematic position, no statement can be made.
