Central City is a city and the county seat of Merrick County in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

History

Originally Central City was founded under the name of Lone Tree 1866. When the Union Pacific Railroad extended its rail network in Merrick County, Lone Tree is quickly formed from a larger community. It was chosen as the county seat. Since the name of the city was considered not suitable for further attract settlers, the name was officially changed on July 1, 1875 in Central City. Since 1880 also the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad reached the city, the population continued to increase. It originated shops, hotels, two newspapers and several factories. 1885 College was built, which is part of the campus of the Nebraska Christian High School today.

Geography

Central City is located on the north bank of the Platte River, at the Nebraska State Route 14 and U.S. Highway 30 ( part of the historic Lincoln Highway). Interstate 80 is located approximately 27 km south. The nearest major town is Grand in Iceland about 35 km away.

According to United States Census 2000, Central City 2998 inhabitants, of whom 1402 men and 1596 women.
