The population density is 24.4 inhabitants per km ².

Cercal was formerly the capital of an eponymous district 1836-1855. Cercal Today belongs to the district of Santiago do Cacém, and received city rights on August 16, 1991 along with the name change of Cercal Cercal do Alentejo. Place and community belong geographically to the area of the Alentejo Litoral.

Nature area Serra do Cercal

With a maximum height of 346 meters, the Serra do Cercal extends between the towns of Sines and Porto Covo in the West, Cercal do Alentejo in the south- east and Santiago do Cacém in the north -east parallel to the coast. It is a formation of mountains of volcanic origin and its own vegetation. The highest point of Serra do Cercal with 346 meters is Mount chaos.

History

From the 14th century various ores (iron, magnesium, manganese) were mined in the area of Cercal. Only in the year 2000, the last mine was closed. In the 20th century there were a total of five active mines: Cerro da Fonte Santa de Cima, Toca do Mocho, Serra da Mina, the Tulhas Serra and Serra de Rosalgar which supplied the steel factories of Seixal substantially. To date, the County of Cercal do Alentejo has large deposits of iron ore.
