Cerkno

Cerkljansko ( Italian: Circhina; German: Kirchheim ) is a town and municipality in the Goriška region in Slovenia.

Location and population

In the overall community consisting of 30 villages and hamlets, 4,988 people live. The main town Cerkljansko alone has 1680 inhabitants. The community is located west of the capital Ljubljana

History

On the archaeological site Divje Babe was discovered by 55,000 year-old Neanderthal flute. The musical instrument found in a karst cave is the oldest of its kind in Europe.

Northeast of Cerkljansko is the Franja Partisan Hospital. This served the partisans in World War 2 as a hospital and was never discovered by the Germans.
