Cerro Lípez

View of Cerro Lípez from the north

The Cerro Lípez is a stratovolcano in the Cordillera de Lípez in southwestern Bolivia and is located in the province of Sur Lípez in the department of Potosí. With its twin peaks of 5,929 meters above sea level it is after Uturuncu the second highest peak of the Cordillera de Lípez.

On some maps of Cerro Lípez is mistakenly referred to as " Nuevo Mundo ". In fact, however, the Nuevo Mundo is located several hundred kilometers to the northeast of Cerro Lípez and is about 500 meters lower. The erroneous designation is due to misleading entries of the German geologist and mountaineer Frederic Ahlfeld that is mentioned in a letter of 1962 to the historian Evelio Echevita that two peaks of the Cordillera de Lípez as " Nuevo Mundo " might come into question.
