Cesare ArzelÃ
Cesare Arzelà ( born March 6, 1847 in Santo Stefano di Magra, La Spezia, † March 15, 1912 in Santo Stefano di Magra ) was an Italian mathematician.
Arzelà came from a humble background and was able to only study in Pisa with Enrico Betti and Ulisse Dini since 1871. After working in Florence ( 1875 ) and Palermo ( 1878 ), he was appointed in 1880 as professor at the University of Bologna to the Chair of Analysis. He conducted research in the area of function theory. The set of Ascoli by him in 1889 was generalized to the set of Arzelà - Ascoli.
