It was founded in 1993 after the split of Czechoslovakia as a state-owned enterprise and is currently in the process of converting into a corporation. The Post maintains a Postal Museum in Prague with a stamp exhibition. The branch office in Vyšší Brod is home to a permanent exhibition about the postal system.

The company operates about 3,400 offices around 10 million inhabitants, is currently still one of the densest networks of post offices in Europe and with almost 35,000 employees the largest employer in the Czech Republic. The line is headed by a Director General, whose core mission currently is to perform the transformation of the post office in a corporation.

History

Česká pošta established on 1 January 1993 after the division of the former Czechoslovak State post 31 December 1992, and has since operated as state enterprises. Although it is still an automatic letter sorting system was introduced in the first year, but the first decade of the society was still largely dominated by the past:

While the neighboring European countries had their postal companies to turn of the millennium privatized mostly liberalized the market for postal services and customized shipping packages to the Internet mail order, complained a study by the Czech Office for Telecommunications in 2006 to short opening times, long queues and an overall lack of customer orientation.

As one of the causes of the monopoly position of Česká pošta was seen in the delivery of letters, which was limited to 350 grams, with the EU accession of the Czech Republic in 2000 deliveries to 100 grams and is since 2006 only for letters up to 50 grams. By 2013, the Czech postal market will be fully liberalized. Therefore, the Czech government has been trying since the mid-2000s to rebuild the state operating as a competitive corporation and made several attempts to streamline the branch structure and partially replace existing services through online services:

Thus, it was proposed in 2008, to close 180 of 3,387 branches and then instead to use mobile bankers especially in rural areas. The proposal sparked massive protests in the population and was supported by local mayors and consumer protection organizations, so that the former Director-General Karel Kratina resigned under pressure from the public. His successor, Petr Sedlacek withdrew the planned closures and promised to carry out the conversion of the post as customer-friendly as possible in a corporation. In fact, it slowed the restructuring of the company after the protests, but had to move again, the conversion into a corporation. The date for this September 1, 2009 was last called, a new date is currently unknown, although always possible revenue from a IPO will be brought into play with regard to the German and Austrian neighbors of the country's politics.

Česká pošta is therefore under considerable profit pressure, which led in 2009 to the fact that Sedlacek had to resign as a result of declining profits and was replaced by Marcela Hrdá in January 2010. This attracted some attention with the intention not to extend the run until 2015, cooperation with the Czech- Slovak Commercial Bank ( CSOB ) and to establish its own Post Office Savings Bank as part of a large-scale enterprise reform. As another innovation, a letter delivery " on-demand " was planned after work, but Hrdá did not find the support for those responsible in politics and was released in February 2011. He was succeeded at first provisionally named Petr Zatloukal, in May 2011 he was appointed Director General of the official Česká pošta.
