Chaerephon plicata

Free tail bats ( Chaerephon ) is a genus in the family of bulldog bats ( Molossidae ). The first species was first described in 1800 Chaerephon plicata of Buchanan. Last was first described in 1975 Chaerephon gallagheri of Harrison. So far, the genus Chaerephon is still relatively unknown.

The name Chaerephon refers to the friend of Socrates, which in the comedy " Aves " by Aristophanes as " Chaerephon the bat " is described.

Description

Chaerephon plicata reaches a head -body length of 65 to 75 mm, Chaerephon jobensis 80 to 90 mm, many African free tail bats reach 50 to 80 mm. The species referred to 17 to 31 g in weight. Of the Faltlippenfledermäusen they differ from one another by the connected by a strip of skin ears. The coat is dense and soft. The top is dark brown, with black and African species also in C. jobensis chocolate - brown to gray. The underside is lighter.

Dissemination

The genus Chaerephon is found in two isolated areas of distribution.

  • Africa, with the exception of the Northwest: Here live the most species, the spread of focus of the process in the Congo Basin.
  • South Asia Oceania: Some species live from East Pakistan to New Zealand.

Taxonomic note

Currently there is a debate as to whether the genera of the free tail bats and the Faltlippenfledermäuse ( Tadarida ) should be combined into a single genus. The IUCN therefore leads until further notice, all members of the genus Chaerephon as Tadarida.
