Chaghcharan ( Pashto / Dari: چغچران; Čaġčarān ) is the capital of the central Afghan province of Ghor, and the name of the surrounding district. The city is 2280 meters above sea level at the river Hari Rud. It has about 15,000 inhabitants, making it the largest in the province of Ghor. Chaghcharan is approximately in the middle of a central route through Afghanistan, which connects the city of Herat, the Afghan capital Kabul over a distance of almost 800 kilometers. However, this road is only part of the year impassable in bad condition and by floods and snowfall in winter. Chaghcharan has an airport, which ensures the connection to other Afghan cities by domestic flights.

In June 2005, ISAF established a Provincial Reconstruction Team under the leadership of Lithuanian Armed Forces in Chaghcharan.
