Chahar Cheragh Square

The Chahar - Cheragh Square (Persian چهارچراغ / CAHAR - Cerag / "Four lamps "; Kurdish Meydana Çarçira ) is located in the Kurdish- dominated Iranian city Mahābād.

At this place, which is one of the oldest in the city, the short-lived Kurdish Republic was proclaimed shortly after the Second World War. After suppression of the Republic by the central government Mohammad Reza Pahlavi here the President of the Republic Mahābād, Qazi Mohammed and some of his ministers were hanged. During the riots in Mahabad after the death of Schuaneh Ghaderi in 2005, up to 50,000 people, according to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran took part in demonstrations against the government of Iran ( KDP -I).
