Chaim of Volozhin

Hayyim ben Isaac Woloszyner ( born January 21, 1749 Voloshin, † June 14, 1821 ) was a rabbi of the 18th/19th. Century and founder of the Yeshiva of Waloschyn.

He studied with Aryeh Leib Ginzberg, Rabbi Volozhin, then at Raphael ha - Kohen, who later became rabbi of Hamburg. At the age of twenty-five years, he became a student of the Gaon of Vilna. According to the methods of his teacher, he founded the yeshiva in Volozhin in 1803, which became one of the most important of the 19th century. He began with ten students, young Woloschinern. As the school's reputation spread, the number of students increased and the number eventually amounted to over one hundred.

His main work is the ethical and Kabbalistic directed against Hasidism font Nefesh hahayim, which was edited by his son (Vilnius, 1824, 2nd edition 1837). Next appeared a u still in print Ruach Chaim, Pirke Avot Comments for (Vilnius 1882). Most of his works were - 1815 destroyed by fire - still in manuscript form.
