The Khamar - Daban (Russian Хамар - дабан, also Khamar Daban Mountains ) is a maximum of 2995 m high mountains south of Lake Baikal in the Republic of Buryatia and Irkutsk Oblast in southern Siberia.

Geography

The Khamar - Daban is administratively for the most part in Buryatia, only a small part in the northwest part of the Irkutsk Oblast. The mountain range extends immediately to the south of Lake Baikal over 420 km in the east-west direction and is up to 65 km wide. It represents a continuation of the Sayan Mountains and is separated by the Tunkabecken in the northwest of this, and north-east of the river Selenga, the Ulan- Burgasy Mountains joins. The greatest heights reached the mountains in the western part and the highest peak is 2995 m with the Baischint - Ula. Otherwise outweighs medium mountains like relief.

Geology

The mountain is formed of crystalline schists, gneisses, basalts and limestone, which are in many places broken by granite intrusions.

Vegetation

In the forests of the lower altitudes Siberian stone pines predominate (Pinus sibirica ) and other pines and firs. The timberline is located at altitudes 1500-1800 m.

Tourism

Thanks to the relatively convenient location ( the Trans-Siberian Railway runs along the foot of the mountains along the Baikal lake shore ) and the small width and thus Siberia small distances is the Khamar - Daban a popular destination for trekking and canoeing (eg Temnik, Sneschnaja ).
