Champion Records

Champion Records was an American record label. Champion was a sublabel of Gennett Records. The headquarters was in Richmond, Indiana.

History

The first champion plates appeared in the September 1925 The repertoire of the label was limited to recordings of Gennett artists -. Often the plates were published under pseudonyms, as they were previously placed under the Gennett label. At first it produced exclusively for the business of the Kresge chain, but later went on to champion plates selling elsewhere.

Although Bennett retired in 1930 largely from the business, remained champion until 1934 as a sublabel Gennetts active. 1934 Gennett and Champion of the Starr Piano Company, the parent company Gennetts sold to Decca Records. The turn secured the rights to the Champion Catalog and reactivated the label for the last time in mid 1935. Champion remained under Decca about a year in business, and was then abandoned.
