Chandannagar ( Bengali: চন্দননগর, Candannagar; earlier French Chandernagore ) is a town in the district of Hooghly in the Indian state of West Bengal. The city is located around 40 kilometers north of Kolkata ( Calcutta) and has about 167,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). Chandannagar is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Kolkata.

History

Chandannagar was established in 1673 and was intermittently by British occupation until the mid- 20th century a French colony. In 1949 it came to the referendum on the fate of French India as free cities of the French Union or connection to India, with only Chandannagar decided to connect. On 2 October 1954, was integrated by the Chandernagore Merger Act in West Bengal. The remaining towns followed in 1956 ( state law 1962) and today form the union territory of Pondicherry.
