The Changlimithang National Stadium is a stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan. It is currently mainly used for football matches, used in archery competitions, as well as cricket. It was also the place with A Tale of Two Cities took place at the first time in Bhutan, a theater outdoor performance.

History

The 15,000 spectators stadium was bidding for the coronation of the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, built in 1974. It initially had a capacity of 10,000 spectators. This was raised at a renovation in 2007 to 15,000. The occasion was the centenary of the ruling since 1907 in Bhutan Wangchuk Dynasty and the forthcoming coronation of the fifth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, on 6 November 2008.

Ugyen Wangchuk in 1885 struck down here the last stand of the ongoing unrest since 1882. The area with an area of ​​approximately 11 hectares has already served since the time of the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, as a place of public events.

Trivia

Johan Kramer's documentary The Other Final was filmed partly in Changlimithang stage. In the movie we went to a football match between the two on the FIFA rankings then the lowest ranked teams, Bhutan and Montserrat. The Bhutan situated at No. 202 won against the 203 in the world rankings, Montserrat, 4-0.
