Charles Augustus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1912–1988)

Karl August Wilhelm Ernst Friedrich Georg Johann Albrecht of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach (also listed as Carl- August and without a hyphen; born July 28, 1912 in Thal Wilhelm; † 14 October 1988 rails on Lake Constance ) was from 1912 to 1918 the last Grand Duke of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach and Duke of Saxony.

Life

Karl August was the son of the last Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe -Weimar -Eisenach (1876-1923) from his second marriage with Feodora, Princess of Saxe- Meiningen (1890-1972), daughter of Prince Friedrich of Saxe- Meiningen, is born. On October 4, 1944, he married Elizabeth Baroness von Wangenheim - Winterstein ( 1912-2010 ), daughter of the Royal. Prussian chamberlain Othmar Freiherr von Wangenheim. The couple lived at the Wartburg, later castle and estate Behringen.

Karl August was an officer in the Wehrmacht and served in a tank regiment. In June 1945, he fled with his family to West Germany just before the Red Army replaced the U.S. occupation in Thuringia. Karl August of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach died on October 14, 1988 in rails on Lake Constance, without ever being returned to his homeland.
