Charles, Count of Maine

Charles IV of Maine ( * 1414 Château de Montils -lez -Tours, † 1472 in Neuvy -en- Touraine ) was since 1434, Count of Maine from 1425 to 1465 and from 1467 to 1472 a 2nd time Count of Mortain and since 1444 Count of Guise from the recent House of Anjou. He was a son of Duke Louis II of Anjou and Yolande of Aragon.

Charles married his first marriage Cobella Ruffo († 1442 ), daughter of Carlo Ruffo, Count of Montaldo, and Ceccarella Sanseverino, with whom he had a son, Charles (* 1436, † 1481 ).

As of 1437, Karl participated in the campaigns of his brother, King Charles VII of France against the English in part, to the administration of Montereau ( 1437), the capture of Pontoise ( 1441 ), the campaigns in Normandy ( 1449-1450 ) and in Guyenne ( 1453).

He sought, the county recover Guise, who had belonged to his father and then his brother René I, Duke of Anjou, before it was conquered by John of Luxembourg in 1425. He began by Guise to complain to the king, who is Louis of Luxembourg, the nephew jeans, took away, and married in 1443 his second wife Isabella of Luxembourg, sister of Louis, before he got it back, the county each year. From this second marriage comes a daughter, Louise of Anjou (1445-1477), the Jacques Armagnac, Duke of Nemours married.

After the death of Charles VII, he joined his cousin Louis XI. on, who commissioned him with the resolution of the conflict with the Duke of Brittany; but his efforts only deepened the gulf between the two parties. His attitude during the Ligue du Bien public ( 1465), was not unique - his kinship and friendship relations with most of the princes of the League led to a sloppy defensive struggle. When he took part in 1465 in the Battle of Montlhery, in which he let the king down and took flight, but he was punished only by the withdrawal of the favor of the king, because he was interested in Karl's elder brother, the "good king" René, not to antagonize.
