Charles Cutler
Sir Charles Benjamin Cutler ( born April 20, 1918 in Forbes, † 23 September, 2006 Orange ) was an Australian politician and from 1965 to 1975 Deputy Prime Minister of the Australian state of New South Wales.
School, military and private life
After schooling Cutler served during World War II in the Australian Army and was wounded at the Battle of El Alamein. After the war he rose to 1960 in the Australian Army Reserve (CMF or AAR) to lieutenant colonel. In addition to his professional activities as an employee of an insurance the father of four children, and others, worked as a sports reporter of a local newspaper as well as president of a rugby association.
Political career
On May 3, 1947 Cutler was first elected to the Country Party in the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales. When he 7 months and 14 days retired on 16 December 1975 after 28 years from the Legislative Assembly, he could look back on ten re- election for his constituency orange.
In 1958 he became first deputy chairman of the Country Party and was subsequently 1959-1975 Chairman of the party.
On May 13, 1965 Cutler was Deputy Prime Minister of New South Wales Province and Minister of Education and Science in the government of Liberal Premier Robert Askin newly elected. In later years he also held the posts of Minister of Local Government, highways and Tourism in the government of his native province. In the years 1968-1972 he also served during the absences of Prime Minister Askin as Acting Prime Minister and Minister of the Treasury. Of his government positions, he also resigned on 16 December 1975.
Both as party chairman and as Deputy Prime Minister, he was replaced in 1975 by Leon Punch.
For his contribution to Australian politics Charles Cutler was beaten in 1973 Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE ) and could thus henceforth call Sir Charles Benjamin Cutler.
Later life
After retirement from active politics in 1976 was Charles Cutler, first director of Sun Alliance Insurance Group, and from 1978 to 1988 chairman of this insurance company.
