Charles de Condren

Charles de Condren (* December 15 1588 in Vaubuin at Soissons, France, † January 7, 1641 in Paris) was a French Catholic priest and followers of Pierre de Bérulle as Superior General of the French Oratory.

Life

Charles de Condren was ordained a priest in 1614 and entered the Oratory in 1617 at. In the following years he was involved in the founding of several oratorios and seminaries. After the death of Cardinal de Bérulle in 1629, he became the second Superior General of the French Oratory ( Congregation of Jesus Oratorii et Mariae Immaculatae ) and contributed significantly to the spread and organizational consolidation of the work. He was one of the leading figures of the École française de spiritualité, his major work, L' Idée du sacerdoce et du sacrifice de Jésus-Christ is one of the most important works of this school. He was confessor and spiritual director of Jean -Jacques Olier and introduced him to the École française de spiritualité. He declined the archdioceses Reims and Lyon, as well as the cardinal's hat. Together with the oratorio he campaigned against Jansenism, and was co-founder of the Compagnie du Saint- Sacrement.
