Charles E. Brady, Jr.

Charles Eldon "Chuck" Brady, Jr. ( born August 12, 1951 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA, † July 23, 2006 on Orcas Iceland, Washington State, USA) was an American astronaut.

Life

Brady studied from 1969 to 1971 medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975 and received a doctorate in medicine from Duke University. His medical internship, he completed then at the Hospital of the University of Tennessee. As a sports medicine specialist, he worked until 1986 at Iowa State University, the University of North Carolina and East Carolina University.

In 1986, Brady in the Navy, where he received training as a flight surgeon. After that he worked on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV -61) and also in the Blue Angels aerobatic team.

Astronauts activity

In March 1992, Brady was selected as astronaut candidate by NASA.

STS -78

On June 20, 1996 Brady started as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia to the hitherto longest flight of a space shuttle. Task were microgravity experiments in the Life and Microgravity Spacelab (LMS ), which were needed as a basis for future experiments on the International Space Station (ISS).

According to the NASA

1999/2000 Brady studied at the University of Texas in Galveston for a master's degree in biology and then retired from active service.

On July 23, 2006 Brady committed suicide near his home on the island Orcas Iceland suicide. He left behind his fiancée and their joint four year old son.
