During the French Revolution he left France with his father and served in the army of Condé from 1792 to 1797. Afterwards, he joined the Russian army in 1801 settled in England and stayed there for thirteen years. After the abdication of Napoleon 1814, Berry went back to France. With his sincere demeanor, he won the sympathy of his countrymen, and Louis XVIII. appointed him commander of the army of Paris at Napoleon's return from Elba.
