Charles Henri Joseph Cordier

Charles Henri Joseph Cordier (* October 19, 1827 in Cambrai, † April 30, 1905 in Algiers ) was a French sculptor.

The French sculptor came in 1846 in the École des Beaux -Arts in Paris, where he trained under Jacques Auguste Fauginet and François Rude. Then he showed an early preference and skill to represent the various races of men, the French government sent him to Africa. He led since then from a large number of oriental statues, and especially busts. 1851 we saw of him a negro of Timbuktu, 1852, the bust of a " African Venus" and the group of a Chinese couple. In the bronze busts of a Mongol and Mongol (1853 ) he tried to achieve a richer color effect, which direction he has remained faithful ever since. In the Salon in 1857 published twelve African busts, mostly of bronze. The picturesque principle, which expressed itself in all these works, Cordier sought to strengthen still frequently by the joining of different materials and by Übersilberung; so he created many works that were composed of bronze and marble, but went further and sent to the salon 1863, the bust of a Algerian Jewish woman from enamelled bronze, onyx and porphyry, 1864, a young mulatto woman in bronze, enamel and onyx, 1866 life-size statue of an Arab bronze, enamel and onyx, 1867, the bust of a fellah of bronze, gold, silver, turquoise and porphyry.

Cordier the statue of Marshal Gérard ( 1856 in Verdun ), the Triumph of Amphitrite (1861 ), John has also created the Baptist for the tower of St. Jacques la Boucherie, in Paris, the statues of the harmony and poetry for the old Paris Opera among others. Cordier is a realist of little imagination, but shows a keen sense of observation.
