Charles Hepworth Holland

Charles Hepworth Holland (* June 30 1923 in Southport ) is a British geologist and paleontologist.

Holland initially studied mathematics and physics at the University of Liverpool, interrupted by the Second World War, and then geology at the University of Manchester. He explored the Ordovician and Silurian there Britain (the latter particularly in Ludlow ) and was Assistant Lecturer. Then he went to the Bedford College, University of London, where he was a lecturer. From 1966 he was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Trinity College in Dublin. In 1993 he retired.

He is particularly concerned with the stratigraphy of the Silurian particularly in Ireland and Britain, but also coordinated the global stratigraphic mapping of the deposits of the Silurian. As a paleontologist, he dealt particularly with nautiloids and graptolites of the Silurian. He published a book on the geology of Ireland.

1984 to 1986 he was president of the Geological Society of London. In 2008 he received the Lapworth Medal.
