Charles Lyttelton, 8th Viscount Cobham

Charles George Lyttelton, 8th Viscount Cobham ( born October 27, 1842 in Hagley Hall, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, † June 9, 1922 ibid ), 1876-1889 also known as Lord Lyttelton, was a British peer and Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party.

Life

Lyttelton was the eldest son of George Lyttelton, 4th Baron Lyttelton and Mary Glynne. The famous cricketer Alfred Lyttelton was his younger brother.

1868 Lyttelton was elected to the House of Commons for East Worcestershire, this seat he held until 1874. Apart from his parliamentary career, he also served as High Sheriff of Bewdley. Lyttelton inherited from his father in 1876 the title of Baron Lyttelton. In 1889 he inherited also his distant cousin Richard Temple - Nugent - Brydges - Chandos - Grenville, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos as Viscount Cobham.

Lord Cobham married Mary Susan Caroline Cavendish, daughter of William George Cavendish, 2nd Baron Chesham in 1878. He died in June 1922 at the age of 79 years. Heir to his title was his eldest son John. Lady Cobham died in 1937.

Lyttelton came from a famous cricketing family, his father ( George Lyttelton ), five brothers, his sons ( John Lyttelton, Charles Frederick Lyttelton ) and his grandson (Charles Lyttelton ) all played first-class cricket and in the case of Alfred Lyttelton even Test Cricket. He played 35 first- class matches 1861-1867, especially for the Cambridge University Cricket Club. In 1886 he was president of the Marylebone Cricket Club.
