Charles Mantoux

Charles Mantoux ( MAY 1877 in Paris, † 1947) was a French physician.

After studying at the University of Paris with Paul Broca and Victor -Henri Hutinel he worked for health reasons in a tuberculosis sanatorium in Cannes. He showed that the is much more sensitive, Felix Mendel developed in the skin sprayed ( intracutaneous ) tuberculin test than his usual time injection into the subcutaneous adipose tissue ( subcutaneous use) of Pirquet. After the publication of his results in 1910 his method supplanted the old test in most countries, and has since been commonly referred to as Mendel- Mantoux test. Mantoux devoted himself to other studies on tuberculosis: He devised a test to those in cattle demonstrate that he also transferred to pigs and horses. This was of great importance for public health care. He turned the test also in guinea pigs to determine the rate of allergic reactions to the tuberculin experimentally. He also made X-ray studies on tuberculosis, published work on the pleural effusion and was one of the first who applied the treatment method of artificial pneumothorax in tuberculosis and the effects studied on the tuberculous caverns.
