Charles McBurney (surgeon)

Charles McBurney ( born February 17, 1845 in Roxbury, Massachusetts; † 7 November 1913 in Brookline, Massachusetts) was an American surgeon ( " appendicitis " ) is best known as a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of appendicitis known.

After studying medicine at Harvard ( to 1866 ) and acquisition of the title of Doctor in New York ( 1870) he went on a study trip to Europe. Subsequently he was a surgeon and professor of this subject back in New York working, where his clinic quickly gained worldwide recognition.

McBurney published in 1889 before the New York Surgical Society his classic report on early operative intervention in appendicitis. He described the site of the most pain in the right lower abdomen, which has since been known as McBurney point.
