Charles of Sezze

Charles of Sezze, real name: Carlo Melchiori, (* October 19, 1613 in Sezze, Italy, † January 6, 1670 in Rome, Italy ) was an Italian monk and mystic. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.

Melchiori was Carlo, the son of a farmer, in 1935 joined in Nazzano as a lay brother in the Capuchin Order. From 1640 he worked in the convent of S. Francesco a Ripa in Rome. In 1648 he got during a church service stigmata, the wounds of Jesus impressed. As a Capuchin, he worked as a gardener, cook, porter, alms collectors and sacristan. At the request of his spiritual director Karl has written important works on his mystical experiences.

In 1882 he was called by Pope Leo XIII. beatified in 1959 by Pope John XXIII. canonized.
