Charles Patrick Fitzgerald

Charles Patrick Fitzgerald ( * 1902 in London, England, † 13 April 1992 in Sydney, Australia) was a professor of East Asian history and has written important works on the history of China.

Life

Fitzgerald grew up in England. Since 1923 he lived in China; 1946 to 1950 he worked for the British Council. Then he moved to Australia and was, though he could not produce a degree, from 1951 until his retirement in 1967, Professor of East Asian History at the Australian National University in Canberra. 1968 gave the University his honorary doctorate. From its founding in 1969, he was a member of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
