Charles S. Roberts

Charles Swann Roberts ( born February 3, 1930; † August 20, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland) was an American game designer and founder of the game publisher Avalon Hill. With his game Tactics he has established the genre of modern conflict simulations; the Charles S. Roberts Award was named after him.

Work

1952 Roberts has in Catonsville, Maryland the game Tactics developed, which is considered the first modern conflict simulation. In 1954 he founded The Avalon Game Company, the first games company that sells wargames. He sold his game about mail order. From The Avalon Game Company 1958 Avalon Hill.

This was followed with Tactics II (1958 ) Gettysburg (1958 ) further games, the new game concepts introduced in wargames.

In December 1963 Roberts had to sell due to a recession Avalon Hill. Eric Dott Monarch Services, a customer of Roberts, took over as Avalon Hill and Avalon Hill was a daughter of Monarch Avalon Printing.

Since 1974, the named after him Charles S. Roberts Award is presented for the best historical conflict simulations of a vintage year. Until 1986 these prices were part of the Origins Award, in 1987 she will be awarded regardless of the Origins Awards.
