Charles Simic

Charles Simic ( IPA: [ tʃ ͡ɑ ː ɻls ʂimitɕ ͡ ] ) (* May 9, 1938 in Belgrade, Serbia) is an American poet and the 15th Poet Laureate of the United States. In 2007 he was appointed Poet Laureate.

Life and work

In 1953 his family moved to Chicago in the United States. He studied at New York University. He is professor emeritus of American literature and creative writing at the University of New Hampshire. He writes poems and essays for The New York Review of Books. In addition, Charles Simic translator of many works from the countries of former Yugoslavia is the American. He wrote numerous essays about the recent Balkan wars and currently the situation in Serbia and Kosovo. His 3 April 2008 published essay on the political and historical background of the recognition of Kosovo by the United States in The New York Review of Books has produced a polemical discussion, involved in the events in the former Yugoslavia senior Western diplomats and historians participated.
