Charlie Musselwhite

Charlie Musselwhite ( born January 31, 1944 in Kosciusko, Mississippi) is an American blues musician ( harmonica, guitar). His trademark is his expressive and at the same time technically excellent harmonica playing, which makes him one of the best harmonica players in the world. He was the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd 's "Blues Brother Elwood ".

Biography

Musselwhite experienced Memphis, as there the rock and roll was born. Under the influence of musicians such as Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, he learned harmonica and guitar playing. Will Shade of the Memphis Jug Band was his musical mentor. His money earned Musselwhite with whiskey smuggling.

At 18, Musselwhite moved to Chicago, where he hoped to find work. Here he came up with the " electric " blues in touch. He played with legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin 'Wolf and John Lee Hooker. Big Walter Horton, himself a student of Will Shade, took him under his wing.

1967, Musselwhite with his own band his debut album Stand Back! on. This success led him to California, where he remained and the hippie scene in and around San Francisco enriched with his blues.

Throughout his career, Charlie Musselwhite has recorded over 20 solo albums and has participated in numerous recordings known colleagues, including Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits and INXS. Musselwhite often played with John Lee Hooker, who was also his best man.

Charlie Musselwhite received numerous awards, including 14 WC Handy Awards, a Grammy Award ( for the album Get Up! Together with Ben Harper ) and six additional Grammy nominations. In 2010 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame Blues Foundation.
