Chatham Island

Chatham Iceland ( Moriori: Rekohu; Māori: Wharekauri ) is the largest island in the archipelago of belonging to New Zealand Chatham Islands in the southwest Pacific.

Geography

The T-shaped, 899 km ² island is dominated by two large bays, Petre Bay in the west with the main town of Waitangi and over 35 km of Hanson Bay on the east. In between is 179 km ² Te Whanga lagoon that is separated only by land bridges from the lake. The south of the island is occupied by a plateau and reaches a height of Maungatere Hill 294 meters above the sea. Furthermore, there are peatlands and long sandy beaches. At a projecting into the lagoon peninsula is the Tuuta Airport ( IATA: CHT, ICAO: NZCI ).
