Chauffailles

Chauffailles is a commune with 3868 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Saône -et -Loire in the Burgundy region.

Geography

Chauffailles lies in the valley Vallée du Botoret, at the edge of the high Beaujolais. The place in the south of Burgundy is located 35 kilometers from Roanne, 50 miles from Macon and 80 kilometers from Lyon. The municipality is crossed by Botoret.

Etymology

To 1274 was Chauffailles Saint -André, then the name first appeared on Chofaye. Maybe the name of the various gangs that during the absence of Louis VII ( Crusade ) France comes terrorized. According to another version, the name was just under Louis IX. changed because there was another place called Saint -André in the immediate vicinity of Saint -André- sous- Dun. Forty years after the first change of name, the name of Chofaye changed in Choffaye. 1688 was the place its present name.

History

During Roman times, was on the Roman road from Lyon to Autun a small settlement, which became the present-day Chauffailles later. There was the small chapel of Saint- André, after which the place was first named. In the 5th century the region was devastated by the incident tribes in later stages came again looters. As early as the 4th century, the former Gaul had been occupied by the Visigoths. The time of Louis IX. was the Count of Saint -Georges Lord of Chauffailles. In the late Middle Ages, the family de Villon owned much land in Chauffailles. They went out at the beginning of the 15th century. Their role takeover the family D' Amanze (originally from Amanzé ). She came in 1383 after Chauffailles. Shortly afterwards, the family began construction of the castle, which was probably completed in the first decade of the 15th century. It had at the beginning probably three towers and two wings that disappeared over time. At the same time the chapel was a real church, which had soft 1836-1840 the Church today. 1718 was the family D' Amanze that Chauffailles had marked for eleven generations, replaced by the family De Saint -Georges. 1809 bought the incumbent mayor, the castle, in 1836 it was bought again another mayor. After the castle a few more times changed owners, it now belongs to the community.

From the Rhone Valley Chauffailles is only accessible via the pass Col des Echarmeaux.
