Chen Chu

Chen Chu (Chinese陈菊, Pinyin Chén Jú; born June 10, 1950 in the municipality Sansing, Ilan County, Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese politician of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ) and the acting mayor of Kaohsiung City. In the 1970s and 80s, she was active in Taiwanese democracy movement. She was among the dissidents ( the "Eight of Kaohsiung " ), who were convicted in connection to the " Kaohsiung Incident " of 1979 years of imprisonment.

Study

Chen Chu studied at the Shi- Hsin University (Taipei ) and the Sun Yat- sen University in Kaohsiung, where she earned a master's degree in the field of Public Affairs.

Political career

Democracy movement

Chen Chu worked in the 1970s as secretary of Kuo Yu- hsin, one of the most important members of the Taiwanese Dangwai movement. In 1979, she worked as an editor at the foundation of the opposition magazine " Formosa " in 1979 and was for a short time the head of the Kaohsiunger offices of this magazine. Following the Kaohsiung Incident of 10 December 1979 Chen Chu was arrested along with other members of the opposition ( the "Eight of Kaohsiung " ) and sentenced in March 1980 because of " public disorder " to a prison term of 12 years. After six years and two months, she was released from prison in 1986 and joined the opposition party founded in the same year DPP.

Public offices

From 1994 to 1998 she initiated during the tenure of Mayor Chen Shui -bian, the Social Office of the Taipei City and from 1998 to 2000, the Social Welfare Office of Kaohsiung City. After the election of Chen Shui - bian as President of the Republic of China Chen Chu ran from 2000 to 2005 the Ministry of Labour.

Following the resignation of the DPP party leader Tsai Ing -wen after their defeat in the 2012 presidential election, Chen Chu took over from 01:03. to 30.05 in 2012 provisionally the party presidency until the election of the new chairman.

Mayor of Kaohsiung

On 9 December 2006, Chen was elected with only 1120 votes ahead of Huang Jun -ying ( Kuomintang ) the first female mayor of Kaohsiung. The election was contested by Huang and the result confirmed by a court in the second instance only on November 16, 2007.

Chen Chu was devoted to the urban transport system, public buildings and the environment. In her tenure, the commissioning of the Kaohsiunger subway fell in 2008.

In 2009, Chen traveled to the People's Republic of China, to campaign for the upcoming 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung. Chen met with the mayor of Beijing and Shanghai as well as the Chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee. The games that the World Games Stadium was built from July 16 to 26 took place and for the district of Zuoying, were a great success and Ron Froehlich, President of the International Association for World Games, even as " the world's best games of all times " praised.

On November 27, 2010 Chen has been confirmed in the third ballot with 52 % of the votes in her office. This makes it the first Mayor of the expanded city of Kaohsiung ( emerged from the fusion of the old city area with the former Kaohsiung County ).

Following the typhoon Fanapi from September 19, 2010 Chen Chu earned criticism from the opposition, because she had made in her apartment a nap, while parts were Kaohsiung underwater. Chen apologized in tears and explained that she had only to rest a bit and want to change their soaked clothing, but otherwise closely followed the development of the typhoon.
