Chen Yi (composer)

Chen Yi (Chinese陈怡/陈怡, Pinyin Chen Yi, born April 4, 1953 in Guangzhou, Guangdong ) is a Chinese composer of contemporary music. She was the first woman who earned a Master of Arts (MA) in composition at the Conservatory in Beijing. It occurs as a violinist in appearance.

Chen Yi's composition commissioned Ballad, Dance and Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra was premiered on March 10, 2004 by Yo- Yo Ma and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra in Santa Ana, California. Conductor was Carl St. Clair.

Chen lived for many years in New York City. 2002, was awarded the Stoeger Prize for her chamber music works. Since 2006, she and her husband, the composer Zhou Long, professors of composition at the Conservatory of Music of the University of Missouri- Kansas City.
